A Lesson in Humility

May 18, 2021 Dannah Gresh

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. —Psalm 139:14

We tend to slap the above verse on T-shirts, post it on Pinterest, or put it on posters in an effort to make ourselves feel wonderful. Yet when I really studied this verse, I realized that’s not exactly the point. Instead, God taught me some important lessons about humility.

God took care and precision when He crafted us. He did not make a mistake when He gave us our brains, our particular learning styles, our personalities, how tall or short we would be. God is perfect, and He is a fantastic artist! Ephesians 2:10 says that “we are his workmanship” or His masterpiece.

When we put ourselves down, we’re actually showing that we have a problem with pride. We’re belittling not only ourselves but the grace of God that is extended fully to us. You are wonderful and you are wonderfully made. Do you believe it about yourself? If you don’t, you will veer quickly into the territory of pride.

Make it Personal

What is it about yourself that you don’t like? How can you remind yourself that even in those areas you are fearfully and wonderfully made?
