Why is your apparel red, and your garments like his who treads in the winepress? —Isaiah 63:2
In the time of Isaiah, there were winepresses everywhere. When the harvest was ripe, workers would gather the grapes and tread them in large vats with their bare feet. The red juice would splatter all over their bodies and clothes.
In Isaiah 63:2, the prophet asks the Lord why His clothes have red stains. The conquering King answers, “I have trodden the winepress,” a pronouncement of His divine judgment.
Skipping ahead, we find a similar picture in Revelation 19:13, which describes Jesus as being “clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word
of God.” In this passage, the Messiah’s robe is covered in His own blood that was shed on the cross to purchase forgiveness of sin. In Isaiah 63, His garment is covered with the blood of His enemies. In both cases, He is victorious. It’s a reminder to us that in the end, Jesus triumphs. He will have the final word over our lives and all the affairs of this world.
