For they cried out to God in the battle, and he granted their urgent plea because they trusted in him.—1 Chronicles 5:20

It is almost as if David was desperately clinging to these words as he wrote them down . . .

Then my enemies will turn back in the day when I call. This I know, that God is for me . . . in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me? (Psalm 56:9, 11)

David wrote this psalm after he had been captured by the Philistines while Saul was seeking to kill him. Most likely David was facing deep fear and uncertainty as to whether he’d even see another day. And yet, he turned back to the truths he knew and called out to God with his victorious battle song.

Have you battled fear and uncertainty so deep that it’s hard to trust God and remember the truths of His Word? Does it feel like the enemy is winning the day and has more power than our Almighty God? Let’s follow David’s lead and run to the truth of God’s Word—the Sword of the Spirit—as our mighty offensive weapon against the roar of the evil one’s lies. One of the greatest ways to wield the Sword of the Spirit is through praying Scripture. Perhaps you can start doing that today as you join in the cry of David’s heart for the battles you are facing. Read these truths out loud:

My enemies will turn back . . . in the day when I call.

This I know. God is for me.

In God I trust. I shall not be afraid!

How to Pray

God, teach me to “dwell in the shelter of the Most High” and “abide in the shadow of the Almighty.” You are “my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Thank You that You will “deliver me from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. You will cover me with Your pinions, and under Your wings I will find refuge; Your faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” (Adapted from Psalm 91:1–2).

What to Pray

Read Scripture aloud to cement these truths in your heart and mind:

  • Ephesians 6:10–18
  • Colossians 1:9–14
  • Jude 24–25
