The Ultimate Escape

January 13, 2022 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

“If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” —John 8:36

When we think of “escape attempts,” it might be in the context of a prison break or of someone fleeing an oppressive regime. But did you know that as a Christ-follower, you’ve succeeded in accomplishing the ultimate escape?

In 2 Peter, it says that as a Christian, you’ve “escaped the corruption that is in the world” (v. 4). You have run away from those sinful desires that used to control you and have been set free through the knowledge of God, the righteousness of Jesus Christ, and the promises of God.

So, why would you ever go back? Yet so often, we do. It’s like we’ve escaped from a burning house, but we run back into it.

In those times when you feel like your flesh is so strong that you can’t say no, remember that God has put His divine power in you (v. 3). He has granted to you all things that pertain to life and godliness. Your escape was successful; Christ has set you free.

What are some reasons that you turn back toward sin? How can you remind yourself that you’ve been set free?
