Take Away the Props

November 9, 2021 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” —Matthew 6:21

In writing about Psalm 131, Charles Spurgeon said, “Remember that where your treasure is your heart will go, and if that treasure be taken away your heart must ache. . . . The man who depends alone upon his God, and whose expectation is from him, has not half the occasions for trouble that he has who is leaning here and leaning there, and leaning in fifty places, for each earthly prop will be the cause or occasion of distress at some time or other.”4

What are your props? Maybe you look to your spouse to satisfy your needs. Or maybe it’s your children, your friends, or your job. Or perhaps you go to things like shopping, food, or your favorite show to make you happy.

Whatever you’re leaning on to meet the deepest needs of your heart will be the cause of distress at some time or other—unless you’re leaning on the Lord. He will never fail you. He will never distress you. He will never let you down.

Make it Personal

How have your “earthly props” let you down in the past? How can you stop leaning on them and instead depend on the Lord?
