Rooted in Joy

February 21, 2024 Kimberly Wagner

There is a river—its streams delight the city of God, the holy dwelling place of the Most High. —Psalm 46:4

In Psalm 46, God is seen dwelling in the midst of His people and refreshing them with His life-giving river (vv. 4–5). As I abide in Him (John 15:1–5), He floods me with joy (Psalm 16:11). Abiding in Him keeps me grounded, unshaken and immovable, as I sink my roots deeply into Him—the vine of my existence—and drink deeply of Him, the Living Water (John 4:13–14).

A good way to evaluate my joy level is to monitor the frequency of my complaining. Joy is contagious and refreshes those around me. If I’m noticing my husband or children are lacking in joy, could it be they’ve picked up something from me?

Psalm 46 reminds me that every difficult thing in life is an opportunity to look to my Savior as my safe place and source of joy. It serves a marker in my life to help me find joy in the Lord even if the earth gives way and the mountains slip into the sea.
