In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will. —Ephesians 1:4–5
Before Christ, we were slaves of sin. We lived in darkness—far from God and without hope. But in Christ we are not only free, we’ve also been adopted into His family.
How is it possible that a God who is holy and sufficient in Himself would adopt sinners to make them His children and give them all the benefits and privileges of His fatherhood? That’s what Jesus did on the cross!
Sin left us orphans, alone, deprived and unpro- tected, but God shows His great love for us in that He chose us from before the foundation of the world to be His. As part of His family, we have the privilege of relating to God as a loving Father (1 John 3:1). We are heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ (Rom. 8:17). We have the guidance of the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:14). And we have the privilege of being disciplined (Heb. 12:5–6).
Rejoice today that we get to be part of God’s family through His Son!
