Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable . . . think about these things. —Philippians 4:8
Philippians 4:8 is something I hold firm to when I find myself getting filled with worry, negative thoughts, and doubts. I redirect myself to what is true and commendable, and that’s found in God’s Word. We need to stay grounded in the Truth of God’s Word consistently, reminding ourselves of what He says and then believing it.
Focus on the Truth. Focus on what God says, and hold firm to that. If we focus on other things, any joy in our hearts will be snuffed out.
When I take time to quietly sit in the presence of God, I walk away strengthened. This isn’t something I could fabricate in my own strength. I think we try to summon up joy, when instead it is a by-product of an authentic life in Christ. We need to run to God, to soak up His Word and seek His face. That’s how we’ll find joy in the midst of discouragement.
