Today we begin reading the book of Esther. Chapters 1–3 recount how King Xerxes, after deposing Queen Vashti, chooses Esther, a Jewish woman, as the new queen. At the same time, Haman, a high-ranking official, becomes enraged when Mordecai refuses to bow to him and begins plotting to destroy all the Jews throughout the kingdom.
