Today we begin reading the book of Nehemiah. These opening chapters tell how Nehemiah, deeply grieved by the news of Jerusalem’s ruined walls, turned to the Lord in prayer and fasting, seeking His favor. God moved the heart of King Artaxerxes to grant Nehemiah permission to return and rebuild. When Nehemiah arrived in Jerusalem, he carefully inspected the walls, rallied the people, and organized them to restore each section—working side by side to renew the city.

Review
Write a sentence or two about what you've just read. This could be a summary of the passage or an observation or highlight that stood out to you.
Reflect
When opposition came against Nehemiah, he declared, “The God of the heavens is the one who will grant us success.” How does confidence in the Lord strengthen you as you serve Him?
"O Lord, Your people are “in great trouble”; so many of our homes, churches, and institutions are in a state of disrepair. May You raise up men and women who care deeply, see what needs to be done, are burdened to pray and confess, and will step up to serve and to believe You for restoration and revival in our day. Amen." —Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth1
