Read through the Bible, Day 141

Today’s text recounts how Ezra led a group of exiles from Babylon to Jerusalem. Rather than depend on armed guards, he called the people to fast and pray, trusting the Lord for their protection. When they arrived, Ezra discovered that many Israelites had turned from God’s commands. Grieved by their disobedience, he humbled himself in prayer, confessed their sins, and sought to restore the people to covenant faithfulness.

Before you begin

Ask the Lord to give you a fresh sense of wonder as you read His Word. Pray for understanding and for an open, humble, obedient heart to receive what He wants to say to you.

Read

Ezra 8–10

Review

Write a sentence or two about what you've just read. This could be a summary of the passage or an observation or highlight that stood out to you.

Reflect

At the beginning of chapter 10, Ezra falls facedown, weeping, praying, and confessing on behalf of his people. When was the last time you were truly grieved over the sins of your family, your church, or your nation? Take some time today to confess these sins before the Lord, asking Him to make your heart tender toward the seriousness of sin.

"O Lord, may I never take sin—mine or others’—lightly, but lead the way in contrition and intercession. Amen."  —Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth1

Respond

Write a short prayer, based on today’s reading. This could include praise, gratitude, personal confession, agreement with the truth, or a request for yourself or someone else.
