God's Condescension
Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth: Psalm 113 says, “The LORD is high above the nations … Who is like the LORD our God, who dwells on high?” This passage talks about God’s greatness. We could never reach Him, since He’s so far above us.
Yet it goes on to tell us the same God who dwells on high also “humbles Himself to behold the things that are in the heavens and in the earth.”
Theologians call this God’s condescension. He humbles Himself—condescends, stoops down to observe the things above us in heaven. And then He stoops down further to get involved with the things on earth.
The Christmas story tells us about the ultimate condescension, when the God who was high above the nations humbled Himself and entered our world as a baby. So I hope you’ll celebrate this season, not just out of habit or tradition, but out of gratefulness for the God who humbled Himself.
