Giving Without Love

Man: Ugh! Do I really have to go to this fundraiser tonight?

Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth: You know, it’s possible to give money without giving your love.

Man: Can’t I just send a check? Or just make an appearance, let everyone know I’m there and then leave?

Nancy: Why do you give? Is it to be seen by other people and earn their praise? Is it out of obligation or a sense of duty? These are some pretty sorry motivations compared to agape love—meeting the needs of someone else without expecting anything in return. Jesus had some strong words for people who give in order to be seen by others.

The apostle Paul said, “Though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor . . . but have not love, it profits me nothing” (see 1 Cor. 13:3).

As someone once said, “You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.” Ask God to fill you with His love. The giving will naturally follow.

With Seeking Him, I’m Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth.
