A Vision of God

I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. —Isaiah 6:1

In the first six verses of Isaiah 63, we observed God’s wrath, anger, and judgment. Then in verse 7, the prophet exalts the mercy and kindness of God toward those who repent and believe. This vision of God helps us to calibrate what’s happening in our world today.

If we didn’t have a vision of God, a God of both wrath and mercy, we would be totally flummoxed by what’s happening in our world, where it looks like evil is winning. But we need in such a day as ours to see God, like Isaiah did at the beginning of chapter 6.

The glory of God is like no majesty any earthly king could ever have. In the final analysis, it doesn’t really matter who is on earthly thrones. What matters is who is on the eternal, heavenly throne. “I saw the Lord.” That’s what we need to give our hearts hope, patience, and endurance when the craziness of the world seems to be taking over.
