Through Thick and Thin

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. —Song of Solomon 8:7

In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul describes a kind of love that’s not natural. It is divine. It’s the kind of love that endures through thick and thin—the kind that never fails. It’s love that is permanent.

That’s why it’s so sad to hear people say, “I just don’t love my spouse anymore.” The fact is if you ever loved your spouse, then you still love them. Your love will endure. The romance may have gone out of your marriage. There may be some steps you need to take to rekindle the flame of that love, but true love—God’s love— never fails.

You might say, “But you don’t know how my spouse wounded me. I certainly had justifica- tion to stop loving them. They stopped loving me.” Their love may not be God’s love, and it may have failed. But if you have God’s love in you, that love will never fail.

Our human love can be weak, but God’s love is perfect and infallible. He makes that love available to flow through us.
