The One Thing

April 11, 2024 Betsy Gómez

“One thing is necessary.” —Luke 10:42

If you’re like most women, you’re busy. You play various roles in life and are constantly juggling multiple responsibilities. If the time comes when you have too much on your plate, how do you know what to keep and what to let go?

In a world that’s calling women to embrace it all and be successful in the home, ministry, and marketplace, we’re pressured to be super women, super accomplishers . . . and super tired and super anxious.

Oh, how sweet are Jesus’ words in Luke 10! “You are worried and upset about many things, but one thing is necessary” (vv. 41–42).

The things you’re troubled with are hindering you from choosing the one thing that won’t be taken away. Your many earthly distractions are blinding you—preventing you from seeing what is eternally yours.

Getting our priorities right is a matter of affections. Unless you choose and treasure that one thing, you won’t get rid of the anxiety that’s silently consuming you. There is one thing that you should place before any other thing in life, and that one thing is Jesus.
