A Picture of Jesus

“Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” —John 13:34

In 1 Corinthians 13, the apostle Paul lists several characteristics of what true love looks like. As we look at each one, we discover that love is something that’s extremely active and not passive.

For example, love doesn’t just feel patient, love practices patience, actively and aggressively. Paul says love doesn’t just have kind feelings, love actually steps out and does kind things.

As we read this passage, we’ll see that Paul is painting a picture. Yes, it’s a picture of love, but it’s also a picture of Jesus. It’s as if Jesus is sitting for the portrait of love. All of these characteristics describe Him. If we want to have this kind of love, then we must allow Jesus to fill our lives.

We must be willing to be emptied of ourselves, because naturally every one of us is born selfish. But when Jesus comes in and fills our hearts with His love, then we find we’re able to love in that same selfless, sacrificial, and serving way that He did.

How can you empty yourself today and let Jesus come in and fill your heart with His love?
