Passing on the Word

In the same way, older women are to . . .teach what is good. —Titus 2:3

In his letter to Titus in the New Testament, the apostle Paul identifies several important characteristics about godly womanhood. One of those characteristics is discernment—to know and to uphold sound doctrine, to teach what is good. You can’t teach what is good if you don’t know what is good, and that takes intentionality. We need women who are firmly grounded in doctrine, in knowing what the Word has to say.

Without this foundation, we’re just passing on a set of customs that our daughters may dismiss as irrelevant. We don’t want to pass on a way of life that’s simply cultural or traditional. We want to pass on the Word itself, because the Word is what endures for generations. The Word is how we can be confident that we can talk about womanhood in a way that will be applicable to every culture, in every time, and in every place in the world throughout history.
