An Ordinary Life

Teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. —Psalm 90:12

Several years ago, while my mother-in-law was in a coma, on the verge of death, I was away with our daughter awaiting the birth of her second child. As I waited for my grandson to arrive in this world and for my mother-in-law to enter the next, I saw that we, as His Word says, are the grass of the field, which is here today and gone tomorrow (Matt. 6:30). Certainly, life happens in parentheses.

God has taught me that the Christian life isn’t necessarily about accomplishing great feats for Him. Instead, it’s a mixture of happy, sad, and neutral; times of difficulty and trials, as well as pleasant experiences. We are to follow Him, day after day, to be attentive to His direction, and humbly obey Him, joyfully and confidently, in the small and large circumstances that He orchestrates for us. The Christian life is about loving Him and those He has sovereignly placed in our lives. It’s an ordinary life, sustained only by His grace.

How is God calling you to serve Him in the midst of an “ordinary” life?
