One Thing

“The Lord has found a man after his own heart.” —1 Samuel 13:14

As a military strategist and warrior, as a musician and poet, and as a statesman and king—in virtually every way—David stood head and shoulders above the men of his day. This man had it all—fame, popularity, fortune, natural ability, and loyal friends.

So, when David says, “I have asked one thing from the Lord” (Psalm 27:4), we wonder: What is the deepest longing of this man’s heart? What matters to him more than anything else? If only one thing could be said of him at the end of his life, what would he want it to be?

In the answer to that question lies the explana- tion for much of what we do—our choices, our priorities, our use of time, the way we spend money, the way we respond to pressure, whom or what we love. David’s answer reveals why God could say, “This man’s heart beats like Mine.”

David certainly had his flaws. He blew it in some of the most crucial relationships of life. But this Lover-God would not let him go.
