Just Step Out

May 2, 2022 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

“The Lord your God has set the land before you. Go up and take possession of it.” —Deuteronomy 1:21

For years I’d assumed God initiated sending the twelve spies into Canaan. However, as I dug deeper into this story, I learned something new. While God told the people to go take possession of the land (Deut. 1:21), it was some of the Israelites who suggested they send men to spy it out.

The people were hesitant to step out and obey God. They were afraid of the unknown. They chose to walk by sight rather than by faith. Their sin wasn’t that they wanted to prepare for the conquest; their sin was a heart of fear and unbelief that prompted them to test the waters rather than take the plunge. It was a control issue.

Isn’t that true for us so many times? We know what God wants us to do, but we want to go check it out first.

Is there some area of life where you need to just step out in faith? May you have the courage to go without knowing, wherever the Lord may lead.

Make it Personal

Ask God to help you clearly see His direction for you, and then take the plunge and step out in faith.
