He Made Himself Nothing

December 13, 2023 Colleen Chao

[Jesus] made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. —Philippians 2:7 NIV

These words have been on repeat in my head (and heart) as I anticipate Christmas: “He made himself nothing.” He, as in GOD. The Great I Am pressed Himself into nothingness, bound Himself up in mere flesh and blood.

It’s beautiful and bewildering. “Nothing” isn’t attractive to me. I want to be “something.” I want love, affirmation, respect, and value. I want to feel significant, to make my mark in this world.

But He turns our world upside-down and inside-out and says, “Anyone who finds his life will lose it, and anyone who loses his life because of me will find it” (Matt. 10:39).

Do we appreciate what He did? Our God became poor so that we could become rich in Him. He set His gaze upon the cruel cross and “humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death” (Phil. 2:8), taking our place so that we could know life forever and ever.

He became like us so that we could become like Him.

Make it Personal

Take time to prepare your heart for Christmas by meditating on what God’s Word has to say about the Incarnation.
