Don’t Drift

January 18, 2022 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you. —Philippians 2:12–13

I live near the St. Joseph River in Michigan and often see canoes and kayaks floating by. It’s no problem for those boats to go with the flow; they can just drift. However, if those in the boat want to go against the current, they need to work hard. If they just sit there, the river will take them in a direction they don’t want to go.

If you let yourself drift in your Christian life, inevitably you’ll find that you’re heading in the wrong direction. Every area of your life will start to show the signs of disrepair and lack of care.

It happens to our bodies. We get flabby and lack energy if we stop exercising. The exercise we did in the past doesn’t do us much good today. The same is true for our spiritual lives. The spiritual exercise you did ten years ago is not all you need for today. You need to exert yourself. If you don’t, you’ll find yourself going in the wrong direction.

Make it Personal

Have you ever found yourself drifting in your spiritual life? What changes did you need to make to go in the right direction?
