Bigger than the Storm

[Jesus] awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. —Mark 4:39

When I think about having a quiet heart, one of the examples that comes to mind is the passage in Mark 4, when Jesus and the disciples crossed the Sea of Galilee. A powerful storm came up during the crossing, but Jesus was able to sleep through it (vv. 37–38).

How did Jesus sleep through that storm? I think it’s because He knew that God was in charge. God raises up the storm; God calms the storm. Jesus knew that, and that’s why He could have a quiet heart.

The disciples, on the other hand, did not have quiet hearts. They were alarmed and anxious. They thought God didn’t care that they were perishing (v. 38). In response, Jesus calmed the storm and said, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” (v. 40)

I don’t know what you’re going through today, but I know that Jesus knows. And He is bigger than any storm. Why are you so afraid?

How can you anchor your heart to the truth that Jesus is bigger than any storm you could possibly encounter?
