A Greater Story

February 12, 2024 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

The Lord handed King Jehoiakim of Judah over to [King Nebuchadnezzar], along with some of the vessels from the house of God. —Daniel 1:2

The story of Daniel takes place in the context of the Babylonian captivity—when the Jewish people endured seventy years of exile in Babylon under the iron fist of a tyrannical despot. The experience was brutal. Seemingly endless. And pointless.

That’s what it felt like from the vantage point of God’s chosen people. And that’s what our story and our world sometimes feel like to us. Proud people and senseless policies. Devaluing and disrespecting what we hold dear. Wearing us out with assaults on truth and those who treasure it. And don’t forget that tireless enemy of God and His people, the devil, inserting himself into this world and attempting to wreak havoc in every direction.

It’s all vexing and wearying, to say the least. But above and beyond all that we see and experience here on earth is a far different, far greater story unfolding. And that story would become clear to us if only we could see life’s happenings and hardships from heaven’s perspective.
