Read through the Bible, Day 279

Good morning. As Jesus walks toward Jerusalem, He prepares His disciples for what He will soon endure. When they seek a place of prominence in His kingdom, He redirects them to its very heart, pointing to His own mission as the model: “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matt. 20:28).

Before you begin

Ask the Lord to give you a fresh sense of wonder as you read His Word. Pray for understanding and for an open, humble, obedient heart to receive what He wants to say to you.

Read

Matthew 19–20

Review

Write a sentence or two about what you've just read. This could be a summary of the passage or an observation or highlight that stood out to you.

Reflect

In what ways are you tempted to seek recognition or status rather than follow Christ in the way of selfless service?

As children of God, we are being made like Christ our brother. Slowly but surely, we are taking on our eternal family resemblance. Our lives are increasingly marked by characteristics that were true of Jesus—humility, a heart to serve, and a willingness to suffer on behalf of others. —Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth1

Respond

Write a short prayer, based on today’s reading. This could include praise, gratitude, personal confession, agreement with the truth, or a request for yourself or someone else.
