Today we begin the book of Ezra. In chapters 1–4, we see the Lord stir the heart of King Cyrus to allow the exiled Jews to return to Jerusalem, restore the temple, and reclaim the sacred vessels. The people respond with joy and obedience—but soon face opposition from surrounding groups, and the work is brought to a halt.
Before you begin
Ask the Lord to give you a fresh sense of wonder as you read His Word. Pray for understanding and for an open, humble, obedient heart to receive what He wants to say to you.

Review
Write a sentence or two about what you've just read. This could be a summary of the passage or an observation or highlight that stood out to you.
Reflect
Today’s passage gives us a powerful picture of the king’s heart being in the Lord’s hand (Prov. 21:1). Why is it comforting to know that even the hearts of rulers are in God’s hands?
"When you are “imprisoned” in circumstances out of your control—even if you’re to blame—you’re not alone. You may feel trapped with no way out, but your heavenly Father is there. The Lord watches what is happening to you and observes how you are doing. In time God will defeat your enemy’s objectives and fulfill His holy purpose for your life." —Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth1
Respond
Write a short prayer, based on today’s reading. This could include praise, gratitude, personal confession, agreement with the truth, or a request for yourself or someone else.
