Claire Black: This is True Girl, a podcast for girls and their moms. I’m Claire Black. Together, we’ll explore God’s truth for us one drive at a time.
Song:
I am a true girl.
Oh, oh, oh, oh.
I am, I am, I am a true girl!
Do you really enjoy God? Have you ever watched someone worship—really worship—and wondered, Why don’t I feel that way? Why don’t I enjoy God like that? What if enjoying God is connected to something we’ve been talking about all season?
Today, we’re learning how purity doesn’t just help us see Jesus clearly, it helps us enjoy Him. Dannah Gresh and Suzy Weibel are still in Belize at the Barrier Reef. The skies are clear, the water is clear—and they’ve just come up from beneath the surface, completely amazed by what they’ve just seen.

Let’s dive in to learn about “Enjoying Purity.” Here’s Suzy!
Suzy Weibel: That was one of the most awesome things I have done in my entire life!
Dannah Gresh: Did you see the Eagle Ray?!
Suzy: Did I? I think he touched my flipper!
Did you see that huge parrot fish?
Dannah: Yes. I could actually hear him munching his lunch.
Suzy: There was even a turtle. It swam right up to me. If I didn’t know better, he was studying me as much as I was studying him.
Dannah: He probably thought you were a pretty crazy looking fish!
Wow! I love this. Every single time I go snorkeling, I get this feeling.
Suzy: Yeah!
Okay . . . I have to say something. Right there, being under the water and seeing all of that . . . it was amazing.
It actually made me of something Jesus said. He said, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”
Dannah: Mmm, in Matthew 5:8, if I’m right?
Suzy: Yep.
So here’s what that means. A “pure heart” doesn’t mean you’re perfect. It means your heart is cleaned by God and is focused on God—like you really want Him.
And when your heart is like that, you start to see God.
Dannah: Not with your eyes . . . but with your heart.
Suzy: Exactly. You see Him in His Word. You see Him in what He’s doing around you. You even start to feel closer to Him, like you’re enjoying Him. It’s just kind of spontaneous ruptures of joy.
Dannah: Kind of like what happened down there under the water.
Suzy: Yes!
When the water was clear, we could see everything. And when your heart is clean, you can see God more clearly.
Dannah: That’s so good. You know, that happened to me just a few days ago. I woke up feeling pretty foul about myself. I just hadn’t shown up too well in life. I was grumpy and defensive, just overall . . . well, impure. I felt pretty far from God. And at church that week, I didn’t even feel like singing during worship.
So, on that morning, I remembered Psalm 51:10, and I prayed, “Create in me a clean heart, O God.” It was me just coming to the end and being like, “Okay, God. I cannot do this. Help me, God!”
And Suzy, do you know what happened?
Suzy: Tell me!
Dannah: First of all, I felt really different—like I had a fresh start. But then, I opened up a new Bible study, and the words on the very first page read, “One of God’s greatest works takes place when He creates a new heart in you.”
Suzy: No way!
Dannah: Now, on any other day those words would not have hit the same. But right after I prayed for a new heart, it was like God was saying, “I see you, and I hear you! And, I’m here!” Well, I erupted into praise and worship! It was amazing.
Suzy: I totally get that. You know, one of my favorite things to do is to stand just off stage during the worship portions of the True Girl tour. Even though I can’t be seen, I’m facing the audience, and they are facing me. All of their worship is so loud and pure, and it just washes over me. I never feel more like I’m in the throne room than when I hear those girls and their moms leading me in worship!
Dannah: I know, Suzy. I actually just got a text this morning from a mom named Courtney. I took a picture of that moment because she was feeling it too. But I don't feel it every time.
Sometimes when I worship, I worship because He is God, because I love Him, because I need Him to clean my heart. Sometimes those good moments are when you know He has. It's just beautiful.
Suzy: It will never cease to amaze me that we don’t make our hearts pure on our own. God does that.
But when we let Him, we get to enjoy Him. And honestly, that’s even better than what we just saw under the water.
Dannah: You know what else doesn’t cease to amaze me . . . in a totally ridiculous way?
Suzy: What?
(Unzipping backpack)
Dannah: Fluffernutter sandwiches and Cheez-Its!
Suzy: Oh, I did work up an appetite down there. Hand it over!
Claire: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” That means when your heart is clean, you don’t just know about God . . . you begin to truly enjoy Him.
And remember, a pure heart starts with God. He’s the one who makes it clean. And that means you start to understand His Word the right way, and you live it out by obeying Him.
So if you’ve ever wanted to worship God more, to actually enjoy Him, think about those three things:
Let God change your heart by praying and asking Him to do it.
Learn what’s true about Him by reading His Word.
Choose to live it out by obeying what you read in His Word.
That’s where joy begins.
If you’re struggling to find it, let me take you back to square one. I’d like to pray for you.
Lord, I pray that these tween girls are filled with such desire that they want to be with You. Through that, that the overflow is just so much joy that You give them. I pray that if any of them feel like they can't quite connect with You, that they can't quite have a relationship with You because of their sin, I pray that You'll remind them that through Jesus You can make them new. In Jesus' name, amen.
Well, I hope you enjoyed this season’s “Deep Dive into Purity.” Let me remind you that Dannah Gresh has been writing about purity for a long time. In her updated book for teen girls, And the Bride Wore White, she helps you learn to love God and enjoy Him. Your mom can go to MyTrueGirl.com to get a copy.

Well, I’m thinking I might go make a fluffernutter sandwich! ’Til next time, True Girl, keep asking God for a clean heart!
