For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of God’s glory. —2 Corinthians 4:6
What is it that makes God’s Word exquisite? What causes it to be “living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword” (Heb. 4:12)? Here are three attributes:
Intrinsic value. Diamonds are said to have intrinsic value. But if there’s no market, what value do they hold? Likewise, what value do the words of the greatest author have if no one reads them? God’s Word is different. It has value for its own sake. Separated from their Author, the words of the prophets and disciples have no value. But breathed by Him, they’re perfect and powerful.
Authority. Because God’s Word has intrinsic value, it carries authority. John 10:35 tells us that “Scripture cannot be broken.” And Matthew 5:18 says, “Not the smallest letter or one stroke of a letter will pass away from the law until all things are accomplished.”
Relevancy. God’s Word transcends all barriers—time, place, language, and culture. Wherever and whomever we are, His Word is precious and apt.
