I have treasured your word in my heart so that I may not sin against you. —Psalm 119:11
Throughout my walk with the Lord, God has significantly used His Word in the process of making me holy (1 Pet. 1:16). His Word has the power not only to protect us from sin but also to purify us when we do sin. As I read Scripture, I often pray that the Lord will wash me with His Word (Eph. 5:26), that He will use it to purify my mind, my desires, and my will.
In addition to its cleansing properties, the Word also has the power to renew our minds, transform us into the image of Christ, and infuse us with Christian graces.
None of us can withstand the assault of temptation and the encroachment of the world apart from a steady intake of the Word of God. Nor can we feed on a diet of worldly pursuits and unholy entertainment then expect to develop or maintain a pure heart. But reading, studying, memorizing, and meditating on Scripture will help guard your heart from sin and stimulate your growth in grace.
