Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk—not as unwise people but as wise—making the most of the time. —Ephesians 5:15–16
The Bible frequently describes contrasting viewpoints—obedience and disobedience, faith and fear, trust and doubt. Ephesians 5 compares the wise with the foolish. Whereas a fool lives for the moment, wise people make their decisions against the backdrop of eternity.
Fools live for themselves and are often careless in the way they handle their time. The wise live for the glory of God and are intentional in how they steward the resources entrusted to them. You might say they take advantage of the time God gives them.
This may mean bringing reading material while you wait for the doctor. It may also mean coloring with your preschooler or listening when a friend wants to talk, realizing those moments are opportunities for nurturing life and relationship.
Does this mean we can’t ever take time off or just “have fun”? Of course not. But it’s a call to be wise, to redeem the time and make the most of every opportunity, always keeping eternity in view.
