When the disciples saw it, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. —Matthew 26:8
Several people were present the day Mary of Bethany poured out her love to the Lord in a memorable, costly act of worship. And none of them walked away unaffected.
To some her display seemed foolishly extravagant. They didn’t have hearts to recognize the infinite worth of worship. Jesus, however, was pleased by the “noble thing” she had done for Him (Matt. 26:10), while Mary herself became fragrant with the ointment used to anoint His feet.
The impact of our worship is much the same. Those who don’t understand an intimate relationship with God may think we’re being “wasteful” by spending time alone in His presence, pouring our love before Him.
Yet regardless of the reactions of those who disapprove, true worship cannot help but make our own lives more fragrant. Our homes, our churches, even our places of business will bear the sweet scent of our devotion. Most important, of course, Jesus will be pleased, which is all that really matters. Worship, offered in its purest form, is guaranteed to make a difference in all directions.
