The entirety of your word is truth, each of your righteous judgments endures forever. —Psalm 119:160
God’s word is true from beginning to end. God’s commandments and promise are immutable, reaching to all times. They are an everlasting spring that the thirsty can persistently savor. God’s mercy does not waver or run out. He took care of our greatest need for salvation, so can he not also deal with our smaller needs of affliction? . . .
[My] past few years have been characterized by affliction—but through it all, the Lord has shown himself to be abundantly merciful to me. . . . By God’s grace, I have been able to thank God for these trials, because I know they are handpicked by our loving Father. . . .
Like the psalmist, without my affliction I would not comprehend the mercy of the word to the extent that I am currently able to. For it is in our darkest days of affliction that our Lord is waiting to refresh our soul with his abundant mercies.1
