No One on the Sidelines

Serve one another through love. —Galatians 5:13

You may be convinced you’re too busy for a mentoring relationship. You just can’t imagine how to fit it into an already overcrowded life. But this generational sharing of life is a basic requirement of the Christian lifestyle. It’s among the “one anothers” of Scripture—loving one another, serving one another, bearing one another’s burdens.

I’m convinced there would be far less need for crisis counseling and treatment if these kinds of woman-to-woman relationships were the norm in the church. And keep in mind that “older” and “younger” are relative terms. You may only be twenty-three, but you’re older than that sixteen-year-old in the youth group. How about approaching her as an older friend who cares enough to teach her what is good? Who knows what tragedy and heartache the Lord might use you to help prevent in that teen’s life?

The roles of older woman—lovingly teaching what is good—and younger woman—humbly learning—are for all of us. These connections are not optional for believers. They’re what Scripture calls us to. None of us belongs on the sidelines.
