I will look favorably on this kind of person: one who is humble, submissive in spirit, and trembles at my word. —Isaiah 66:2
If you’ve ever traveled in the Middle East, you’re probably familiar with the reverence that Muslims accord to their holy book, the Qur’an. They never place a copy of the Qur’an on the floor or treat it casually. Rather the Qur’an is to be kept above the level of their heads and above all other books in the room. They treat it with great care and believe that every word is holy and it should be highly respected.
Do we treat God’s Word with as much reverence?
The Scripture says God has exalted His Word above even His own name (Psalm 138:2 KJV). If God esteems His Word that highly, what should be our attitude toward His Word?
In Psalm 119, David speaks of loving the Word, reverencing it, delighting in it, longing for it, trusting it, and fearing it. Isaiah says that God loves the one who trembles at His Word. When it comes to the Bible, we should have an attitude of reverential awe and fear.
