A Desperate Need

Encourage the young women . . .to be self-controlled. —Titus 2:4–5

Sadly, many women today are living lives far from self-controlled and sensible—both those in and outside of the church. But if our reflexive reaction is to regard them with disapproval, we must ask: Have we fulfilled our responsibility as older women? Have we modeled the beauty of an ordered life, lived under the lordship of Christ? Have we been faithful in reaching out to our younger sisters, teaching what is good, and training them to live a life that honors Him?

In some cases, these younger women have never been adequately parented. They don’t know how to make a marriage work, raise kids, or lead fruitful lives. Amid life’s pressures, it’s easy for resentment, depression, and wrong thinking to creep in.

They need older women in the church to help train them to live self-controlled, wise lives. They need mothers in the faith to encourage and instruct them, helping them keep their eyes on Christ and maintain spiritual and emotional equilibrium.

They need older women to lovingly teach them what is true and good.
