Yesterday I encouraged you to enlist the help of a “support buddy” to help you simplify your life. Today, I’m going to take it a step further for all of you who are reeeaaally serious about getting out from under the “crush of stuff.”
My friend, Andrea Salzman, is a whiz when it comes to eliminating clutter. In fact, she told me about Marla Cilley's ideas for making de-cluttering a daily lifestyle rather than an all-day de-cluttering binge. Here’s what she suggests:
First, grab a garbage bag, laundry basket, or—if it’s really bad—an army tank, and set a timer for 10 minutes. Gather at least 15 – 20 items to give away. As you meander through the rooms of your house, ask yourself these questions:
1. Do I use this?
2. Do I have a place for this?
3. Is this item useful?
If the answer to any of these questions is “no” (that’s right—any—not all of these questions), then get rid of it. You’re simplifying your life so you can breathe easier and so God’s Word can have its full effect in your life, remember?
Once the timer goes off, take the contents from your bag, laundry basket, or army tank out to your car and drop your donations off at The Goodwill. That’s just one option, of course—you can “gift” your stuff to a friend. You know what they say . . . “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure.”
Now, here’s the part for those of you who are reeeaaally serious. Are you ready for this? Do this not just once, but every day until you’ve gotten out from under the crush of stuff. You may even want to set a specific time to do this daily.
Are you up for the challenge? If so, after you’ve gone through your house, send a picture of your pile of give-away items to Info@TrueWoman.com, and we may post your picture right here!
Check back tomorrow for the last in this “Simplify” series to learn how to simplify your soul!
