A Different Kind of Best-Dressed List

Nicole Richie & Joel MaddenDid you watch the Oscars? I did! I watched every second from the pre-show specials to the after show commentary. I loved it! It's not that I'm a huge movie buff. To be honest I've already forgotten who won the big awards. For me, it's all about the dresses! I live vicariously through the beautiful stars adorned in fabulous gowns made by the world's top designers. MoNique

After watching the show, my own wardrobe looked more drab than usual. My drawers full of jeans and T-shirts seemed boring. I longed for an occasion where I'd need a fancy dress, sparkling jewelry, and a beautiful up-do.

Then, this verse came to mind.

Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity (Colossians 3:12–14).

God asks us to consider a different kind of clothing. As His children He wants us to put on those virtues that make us attractive to a lost world—not to draw attention to ourselves, but to point others toward Him.

I can't help but wonder, what if there were commentators standing by to judge how well I am clothed in the qualities mentioned in this verse? Do others see compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and love when they looked at me? If these were the hallmarks of beauty, would I make the best-dressed list? Would I be among the worst?

It's just like Jesus to use something like the Oscars to teach me how much His standards differ from the world's. I appreciate His gentle reminder that gowns and glamour are fun, but they aren't what matters most.

What about you, sweet girl? What are you clothing yourself with these days? Which of the virtues mentioned in Colossians 3:12 do you most need to work on in order to have a "wardrobe" that meets God's standards for His people?
