Read through the Bible, Day 83

In today’s reading, Saul disobeys God by sparing King Agag and the best livestock, leading to his rejection as king. God then chooses and anoints David, a young shepherd, as Saul’s successor, and the Spirit of the Lord departs from Saul.

Before you begin

Ask the Lord to give you a fresh sense of wonder as you read His Word. Pray for understanding and for an open, humble, obedient heart to receive what He wants to say to you.

Read

1 Samuel 15–16

Review

Write a sentence or two about what you've just read. This could be a summary of the passage or an observation or highlight that stood out to you.

Reflect

1 Samuel 16:7 says that, “humans see what is visible, but the LORD sees the heart.” Take some time to ponder what the Lord sees when He looks at your heart. Are there any sins you need to confess? Areas you need to grow in? People you need to reconcile with?

"King Saul was more concerned about preserving his reputation and his position—about looking good —than about being right with God. His response to God’s prophet revealed a proud, unbroken heart." —Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth1

Respond

Write a short prayer, based on today’s reading. This could include praise, gratitude, personal confession, agreement with the truth, or a request for yourself or someone else.
