Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and incomprehensible things you do not know. Jeremiah 33:3
Incredible advances in technology have made it so we have immediate access to virtually anyone, anywhere, anytime.
At the risk of sounding like Fred Flintstone, I still can hardly believe how this technology has transformed our ability to connect with one another. No longer do I need to look for a pay phone in an airport or wait until I get to my hotel room telephone to call my family. I can do this from my smartphone from anywhere.
And I love text messaging. For quick notes between my colleagues and me, it’s a wonderful asset in my business. But there’s nothing more precious about this tech- nology than the ease of the connections between my family and me. A few words back and forth with grandchildren is an incredible way to stay in contact. “I love you, Luke. Hope your test went well today. Granddaddy.”
“Thank you, G’daddy. It went great. I love you. Luke.”
Of course, by the time our grandchildren have grandchildren, the above references will likely be as irrelevant as yesterday’s news.
It’s hard to conceive of a more advanced way of communicating than we have at our fingertips unless we’re talking about the “technology” available to this Old Testament prophet.
Because of Israel’s disobedience, God had given Nebuchadnezzar and his mighty army their way with the Israelites. God’s people sat in exile, isolated and afraid. Worst of all, they had once enjoyed instant accessibility to their heavenly Father through the temple and its twenty-four-hour priests; now they felt like they were in complete isolation. These Jews were far away from their God and felt hopelessly out of reach.
So God told Jeremiah to tell the people something important on His behalf. “Call to me and I will answer,” He said (v. 3). “Even though you’re hundreds of miles from your homes and feeling completely alienated from Me, I am reliably available. Call Me.
Here’s the message for you and me. God is never out of reach. His ear is always tuned to our call. He is always listening. And nothing the tech world will ever conceive will be more speedy or more reliable.
The sovereign God of the universe is just a prayer away. Believe this. He really is. “Father in heaven,” you might say as you head to a meeting or drive to the warehouse for more supplies. “I love You. Please fill me with Your Spirit. I want to please You in everything I do. More than anything, I want to be Your man. Help me to be Your worthy ambassador with everyone I see or meet. Thank You for loving me. Amen.”
