Words Like Honey

July 24, 2025 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

Your lips drip sweetness like the honeycomb, my bride. Honey and milk are under your tongue. —Song of Songs 4:11

At one point in the Song of Songs, the groom takes time to praise his bride for how she blesses him and others with her words. This woman doesn’t babble on and on like a flowing brook. She doesn’t gush everything she thinks. Her words, like honey, are measured. They are thoughtful and sweet.

Her tongue has a filter. It has a governor—much like the safety mechanism that limits the speed on a car or boat. And her words strengthen and encourage the hearts of those who hear them instead of causing harm and contention.

I want to be like that woman, don’t you? I want my words to minister grace to others, starting with my heavenly Bridegroom.

With God’s help, let’s use our tongues to build up those around us rather than tearing them down. Above all, let’s speak words that make much of Christ. Words that adorn His gospel and put His loveliness on display. Words worthy of people whose hearts have been won by His amazing grace.
