Be gracious to me, God, be gracious to me, for I take refuge in you. I will seek refuge in the shadow of your wings until danger passes. —Psalm 57:1
I love birds. Their sweet chirping, their beautiful colors, how they prepare their nests, how they care for their chicks—it simply amazes me. But I marvel even more that God uses this image to show us something of His character. It’s fascinating to see how, with small things in creation, God teaches us transcendental truths.
The ark of the covenant, for example, which symbolized God’s presence among the people, was covered by the wings of the cherubim. The wings of birds are also used as a symbol of the care, protection, shelter, refuge, and security that God gives to His people.
In Psalm 57, we see David fleeing from Saul, who was trying to kill him. The first thing this brave warrior who killed Goliath asks of the God of mercy and tenderness is to “seek refuge in the shadow of your wings.” When he was under those “wings,” there was nothing to fear. It was the safest place.

How has God been a refuge and shelter for you during times of fear?
