Whose Pleasure?

March 14, 2025 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

“The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what pleases him.” —John 8:29

In a short straightforward sentence Jesus describes the essence of obedience: always doing what pleases the Father.

So intimately connected was Jesus to the Father that He always knew what the Father’s will was, no matter the situation. There was no checklist or decision tree involved, just heart-to-heart love, trust, and submission. All the way to the cross.

Obedience to the Father is not always an easy thing for us, with the whole flesh vs. the Spirit fight going on and on within us (Gal. 5:17). But there is a way to move our thoughts, and even our desires, toward the Spirit side of the battle—that is by asking, What would please the Father?

Though we are inclined to make decisions based on our pleasure, think of the joy that rises up to the Father when we seek His pleasure instead. And isn’t there greater pleasure in pleasing Him than in pleasing ourselves?
