When You’re Too Tired

January 17, 2026 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

[Jesus] came to the disciples and found them sleeping. —Matthew 26:40

Jesus’ disciples knew all about being too tired to pray. At the moment that their dearest Friend needed them to keep spiritual watch with Him, emotionally and physically exhausted, they succumbed to sleep. Jesus didn’t berate them. But He did remind them that the failure to “stay awake and pray” would leave them vulnerable to temptation.

I’ve discovered that the more tired I am, the more I need His presence. Yes, there are those days when the eyelids are heavy. But there’s something energizing about time spent in the Word, praise, and prayer. Perhaps that’s because when we express our weakness and need to God, He pours out His grace.

If you’re consistently exhausted, ask, “Why am I tired?” Is there a simple physical explanation that would be helped with vitamins, diet, and exercise? Are you making unwise choices? Are you doing things that aren’t on God’s agenda for you at this season?

When your body is weary, ask God for the physical strength necessary to do His will; He knows your needs and can be trusted to meet them.
