“You are witnesses today that I am buying from Naomi everything that belonged to Elimelech, Chilion, and Mahlon. I have also acquired Ruth the Moabitess . . . as my wife.” —Ruth 4:9–10
When Boaz approached the nearest kinsman about redeeming Naomi’s family land and marrying Ruth, the man declined— freeing Boaz to do so himself. This was wonderful news for both women. Ruth would be a wife again, her husband’s family name preserved. Naomi, once destitute, would be rescued from poverty.
Who could have brought about this turn of events? None other than our great, redeeming God, who had orchestrated the whole string of circumstances from start to finish.
Once Ruth and Boaz were married, their son Obed would become the grandfather of King David—and ancestor to Jesus, the Kinsman-Redeemer of all mankind!
Though the sorrows of these two women felt final, God was still writing their story, just as He is in our lives. Their losses became the very stage for His story of redemption. And in their generous benefactor and hero, Boaz, we are pointed to our ultimate Rescuer, Redeemer, and Husband.
