Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, I also send you.” —John 20:21
In fear for their lives, the disciples locked themselves in a room. They had witnessed the savage torture and death of the Lord and then, that very morning, heard the news that Jesus’ tomb was empty.
Given the fuller view that history provides us, we may wonder why they were still afraid. If the tomb was empty, then surely Jesus was alive, right? And that meant that all He had promised would be coming true. But could they be certain this wasn’t a Roman scheme set in motion to lure these Christ followers out into the open so that they too could be arrested, tortured, and killed?
While these possibilities slithered through their minds, Jesus entered the room. He was alive! Indeed. And then He spoke these words: “I am sending you.” Weighty words, for sure. Words that would fill every day of their lives with eternal purpose. They would never forget what they saw or what they heard.
