Until the Noise Stops

August 30, 2025 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

The temple’s construction used finished stones cut at the quarry so that no hammer, chisel, or any iron tool was heard in the temple while it was being built. —1 Kings 6:7

If you’ve ever been near a construction site, you know it can be noisy. But when Israel’s temple was built, the stones were shaped and cut off-site. By the time they reached the building area, no noise was necessary; they could be fit together as an edifice to display God’s glory.

There’s a spiritual analogy in this Old Testament picture. Right now, we’re feeling the rumble of life’s heavy machinery, the tools’ edge. But like “living stones” (1 Pet. 2:5), we’re being shaped for placement in a faraway temple fit for God’s glory. All this hammering and chiseling is taking us somewhere.

If you’re feeling disappointment, perhaps it’s because you’re demanding that life be free from suffering. But that’s for later. We’ll never know the trouble-free existence of heaven until we’ve been fitted for our eternal Home by our heavenly Builder who’s forming us into “a spiritual house” (v. 5), a dwelling place for His holy presence.
