This horn waged war against the holy ones and was prevailing over them until the Ancient of Days arrived. —Daniel 7:21–22
How I love that word until. What it represents gives me goosebumps. I think of our many tiring battles but also of the places where God’s people are persecuted. How long will this go on? Until.
There’s an “until” to every one of our losses, pains, and grievances. All these atrocities have permission to last until “the court will convene, and [the enemy’s] dominion will be taken away, to be completely destroyed forever” (Dan. 7:26).
Yes, one day the righteous Judge of all the earth will hand down the verdict—“Guilty!”—to every cruel, arrogant, antichrist ruler. Their power will come to an end, and we’ll begin to reign with Christ forever.
In the meantime, “there will be war” (9:26). But the violence and sacrilege wreaked by God’s adversaries will only continue “until the decreed destruction is poured out on the desolator” (v. 27). It’s decreed. The destruction and desolation these evildoers have poured out on others will one day be poured out on them. They will be no more.
