Uninterrupted Time with God

January 11, 2026 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

Give me an undivided mind to fear your name. —Psalm 86:11

Whether it’s hungry children, barking dogs, or telephone calls, it can be difficult to concentrate on Bible reading and prayer. There will always be distractions, but the following insights have been helpful to me.

Many distractions can be avoided simply by getting up earlier. Jesus would get up before daybreak so He could enjoy unhurried communion with His Father. You can also ask God to help you recognize and ignore unnecessary distractions. For example, I’ve learned I don’t have to answer the phone every time it rings.

Years ago, I had the honor of meeting President Ronald Reagan. I wouldn’t have considered taking a phone call during that meeting. When I’m in staff meetings, I generally ask that all phone calls be held except for emergencies. Yet how often have I found myself in an appointment with the King of the universe, jumping up to answer every phone call as if it were more important than He! Is it not disrespectful for me to put God “on hold” while I stop to attend to every detail that comes my way?
