“May you receive a full reward from the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge.” —Ruth 2:12
In the midst of their misfortune, Naomi and Ruth demonstrated two very different views of God. Naomi saw God as her Antagonist—the source of her misery: “The Lord’s hand has turned against me. . . . the Almighty has made me very bitter. I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty” (Ruth 1:13, 20–21).
Ruth, on the other hand, saw God as her Protector—someone who could be trusted, even when she could not see or understand what He was doing. Boaz, who had heard of what she had done for Naomi, lauded her faith: “May you receive a full reward from the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge” (2:12).
Ruth’s trust was not in Boaz, generous and kind as he was. She looked beyond him to God Himself for safety and shelter, protection and provision. And He did not fail her—or her mother-in-law, Naomi. Just as He will not fail you.
